What are parabens? Why is there such concern about using parabens in cosmetic and hair products? I’ve been wondering what are the health effects, good or bad, about this preservative.
According to realsimple.com, parabens are a preservative that have been used in products since the 1950’s to inhibit the growth of bacteria. In the 1990’s, according to certain studies, parabens have been found to be xenoestrogens, which means it mimics estrogen in the body. Too much estrogen has been linked to breast cancer.
In 2004, a British cancer researcher found parabens in malignant breast tumors. Recommendations were made to limit the paraben levels in products. Critics of this research questioned the fact that they did not test normal tissue to see if it also contained parabens. Therefore, questioning the link between parabens and breast cancer.
So, what I take away from this information is if I can get a paraben-free product, I do. But then that leads me to another question. Are the ingredients in this product safe? What I do know is there are many variables that can lead to a person getting cancer. It’s not usually one thing. Genetics, environment, diet, and overall health. I suggest read and inform yourself to make the best decision for you.
