During the Summertime it’s nice to get outside to workout. Exercise reduces stress, improves heart health, helps with weight loss, and makes you feel happy. What are the most beneficial aerobic exercises?
There’s no one exercise that is best for everyone. But there are three major goals your exercise program should include.
- It is aerobic. It uses large muscle groups repetitively for a sustained amount of time.
- You perform it for 30 to 60 minutes, three to five times per week.
- It is something you will enjoy doing for an extended period of time.
Here are some exercise choices:
Walking – Easy to do, and you can do it anywhere. Make sure you have good walking shoes.
Cycling – It helps the heart without the mechanical stress on back, hips, knees and ankles that walking can cause.
Ski Machines, Stair Climbers, Steppers, Ellipticals – First, determine if these types of machines are within your capability. Give it a trial run at the store or gym. Make sure you pass the “talk test” while exercising at a moderate pace so your not putting too much stress on your body. If you have hip or joint issues some of these machines might not be right for you.
Swimming – It is an aerobic activity, but not as efficient as walking, running or cycling. It’s best to swim for 30 to 60 minutes. Water aerobics and water walking are good alternatives for those with joint pain.
Jogging, Aerobic Dance – These are very beneficial aerobic activities. But if you suffer from joint pain or shortness of breath you should not do these types of exercises.
